Best Friends Animal Hospital has rescued more than 600 animals from the Shawnee Animal Shelter since their program began in 2004. Each animal is spayed or neutered and vaccinated before they are shown to the public.

The program is driven by volunteers who have graduated from a 6-week course on general pet care, pet health programs, hospital safety, and communications before they are certified to select an animal from the shelter to care for and public presentations.
